It all depends on how much money you have to spend There's one company that actually makes an ice substitute type material out of plastic and you can skate on it just like ice. Its very expensive though. I would probabley try hardwood, rubber mats or poured cement/pavement because if youre playing roller hockey then any smooth, flat surface will do. Plus if you go poured cement or rubber mats, youll have an easier time converting it into an ice rink in the winter.
Yes, wearing protective eye wear is always a good Idea when using any power equipment. I use a pair of protective sun glasses.
