Question:

If I keep painting paint-by-numbers will I be able to paint without them?

I paint a lot of paint by nubers but yet I don't seem to be able to paint without them? Help?

Answer:

no.paint by numbers is staying within the lines and usually little shading. Painting is art, your lines, your shades, your soul.
Do you know how to draw? Do you understand shapes, colors, and how to make a complete picture? Do you understand composition and light quality? If you don't then it's no wonder you don't know how to paint without someone doing all the hard work for you. If you're actually interested in learning how to actually paint, then I suggest finding someone to teach you or looking up references and resources to help you.
If simply wanting to paint realistic pictures, I believe that it gives you a good color reference to start. Paint by numbers seems boxy, and doesn't involve much blending and shading, but does give you great insight on a base color scheme. If you want to expand your abilities you might want to start adding your own shades and blends as a 2nd layer to the paint by number you started. This might give you some concept and practice if you enjoy painting anyway. Truly, you need to try and express your own artistic capabilities in works of your own and just let it flow! You might be surprised with yourself. Art is based on opinions anyway. actual definition of art: Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. given by wikipedia Under the sources there is a website to help you learn to draw and paint, it is free to use. This might suit your needs for a starting point. You might also just search free art activities or free art classes online. It may lead to more promising results.
paint by numbers just requires you to fill in areas with color .. its not gonna help you learn to paint very well, well beyond getting a little practice with a brush. what i do advise you to do is to practice your brush strokes; learn the colors, mixing colors how they go together, drawing/paint from life (still life, as in objects) even if they come out bad at the beginning it help you get a better feel for it, trying to get certain effects from your basic rush strokes, like texture (although that doesn't apply everywhere, you paint in your own style after all ;) ) what matters is that you get something out of those paint by numbers, but not what you should, you need to also be able to draw out the shapes you want, it puts you in a good starter setting, and you can advance that to apply it to a technique, having the separate colors you need to build up the shape you wish, then blending , or not! that's the beauty of it there isn't really any wrong or right with art! ultimately best shot is to study! watch online video tutorials ( there are many, there are good ones even on Youtube! ) also you can go to an art teacher, who will teach you what you need to know in order to start, but the rest of the development is up to you !
