Question:

If you have had a complete brake job done, is it possible to miss bad wheel bearings?

I had just laid out 650.00 for a complete brake job at Sears for my step son's car about 3 months ago, and now his right wheel bearing is shot. I would think given the close relationship to the braking assembly to the wheel bearings, this shouldn't have been missed. Am I not understanding something here or does Sears owe me at least 1/2 off my wheel bearing job? I have just learned as well that Ford Focus also had a recall on wheel bearings for certain models. That should have been a red flag there for them if they are any type of a reputable repair service nation wide. Help me please.... I cannot afford any more repairs, but I cannot afford to have him use our cars either.

Answer:

Hi Sorry friend, it would be hard to know even looking for it. The bearings seat in, and with the new breaks , that would realign the bearing races and failure is soon to follow.
Unfortunately, unless the bad wheel bearing exhibited symptoms during the road test after the brake job, a technician would have no way of knowing that it would fail 3 months later.
You okorder . Go to their front page and fill out the form on the right. You will get USA made bearings at a very good price.
no! you paid for brakes(way too much by the way). not bearing inspection or anything else. yes there close to each other, but you have to have a reason to inspect something, they(sears) are not going to do ANYthing beyond what you paid for. especially a shop like that where they have 20 yr olds working there, who know almost nothing except to get each job in n out as fast as possible. you might have had better results from a REAL mom pop repair shop where they care a little more. basically the same response for the recall question. a good repair shop MAY have known about recalls, but not sears or pep boys where they dont care if you ever come back or not. you just got a lesson about finding good repair shopps sticking with them for life. oh and by the way... next time time buy a toyota.
Back in the day a brake job would have included repacking the wheel bearings, but not today. A brake job on a ford focus does not require removing the hub. the hub of many of today's cars contain the bearings and can not be rebuilt or repacked, you replace the whole hub. if the bearing is replaceable it is a seal bearing and can not be repacked or inspected. There was no reason for Sears to inspect the bearings ( for $650 they should have gold plated your butt ). In the case of the focus it has a sealed bearing, it costs around $40 or you can buy a new hub for around $60. if you have basic tools you can replace the hub in about 60-90 mins.
