I have always loved garden and helpped my mother in hers all the time as a child. I have an screened porch and don't use it anyway so i wanted to start a garden.Where to start? What to buy to begin?

Answer:

Try herbal plants in your kitchen. Like Basil and Thyme. It adds such beauty in a room.
you can start with flat that you can buy ace hardware$5.00 seeds- tomato-beef steak peppers-wonder boy cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage-flat dutch, plant seeds by the end of february to have plants to transplant into pots /guide sticks good luck was a farmer for 20-years /greenhouse on site
Just start after winter... There are lots of wonderful and easy plants to start with... Like Cosmos (drought tolerant with beautiful orange, red, pink and white daist-like flowers), Zinnias (Also drought tolerant and quite attractive to butterfiles), The famous blue cornflower, Moss rose,...
Study how many hour of sunlight you are getting in your porch in winter summer and spring even if it is an approximation. Select the kind of plants you want to grow - annual flowers, herbs, orchids, small shrub, tropical plants etc. Put all this information again in this place. I and others can give you a sane answers instead of speculations next time.
The things to consider are the lighting and your weather. Which direction does your screen porch face? If it is facing north you will need to buy ferns and plants that do not tolerate too much sun. If it faces south you can purchase plants that need lots of sun like Jade and other full sun plants and vegetables. You will want to consider your weather if any of your plants will get very big and need to be brought in in the winter. Some plants can handle freezing others will die. You can put some plants on tiers in smaller containers. It might help to look in magazines or the Internet for pictures of gardens. Better Homes and Gardens magazine is a good one with lots of ideas. You might just want to go to a garden center and look around at container designs, plants, etc. Come springtime the garden centers have so, so many choices. Having a garden is very pleasing to so many - I wish you luck:)
