NO you can use it as a matter of fact where I live they had a program where if you called a certain phone number the fire dept. would come and install it for you.There are a lot of houses that were built before smoke detectors came into play so there was a drive for low income folks to have them installed for free. So go right ahead but I would get a good one and I would also put a reminder in my computer to tell me when the batters need replaced' On another note I would get the proper paper work to rent out a room,most places you have to have to meet certain requirements before you can rent or it is against the law and if you get a dead beat in there you may have a big headache headed your way. Just a suggestion but when yyou rent you are letting a stranger into your home.
Smoke detectors are the law everywhere in the USA. Strapping a water heater is always a good idea, and I believe HUD always requires it, but it seems that only states where earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes are common require strapping.
