Question:

Installing a fan ..... wires?

Hello,I got a ventilation fan for the bathroom. The fan has 2 wires and there are 2 wires sticking out of the wall. How do I know which wire connects to which wire? What would happen if I connect the wrong wires?

Answer:

It's usually color coordinated like white to white and black to black but if you really want to be safe check your wires with a tester and go from there.
Check the voltage with a meter. If correct just wire it. At one time in the US the wiring wasn't color coded. Not the safest but it worked!
first find out if there is any power on the wires sticking out of the wall they are probly controled by a switch somewhere in the room . there sould be a white and black wire on the fan and sticking out of wall connect color to color . if yoiy connect it wrong it will eather blow a fuse or not run at all
Usually its a white/red and a black wire that stick out of the walls/ceelings. All you need to do is to match the colors together, red/white on red/white and black on black. White is usually the live wire and black is the return wire. If you plug them the other way around you can short out your lamp and pop your breakers or burn a fuse. just make sure the wire is not live so unclip your braker or unscrew your fuse for that circuit. If all your wires are black you will need a electric meter to know which one is which. Also sometimes black wires have a white line on them to differenciate from full black wires! hope it helps
It doesn't matter, they are made so that no matter what wire you connect the fan will work, just don't get a fan that has 3 wires because then you have to wrap electric tape around the 3rd wire and try to fit it somewhere so it wouldn't be seen. The Chandliers are the same way, 2 wire connect to the 2 wires and no color matching is necessary.
