You have to answer the question why is iron a metal. It is because it has an incomplete outer d electron shell which allows the basic metal structure to exist. It forms an atomic lattice with delocalised electrons effectively filling the spaces between atoms. This results in the physical properties (malleability, ductile etc.) it also gives a distinctive and wide spectrum of electronic states which give it the shiny appearence (light is not absorbed but reflected) and also facilitates electron transfer along the a wire (conductivity). In terms of chemical properties, these are principally determined by it having 2+ and 3+ as its stable oxidation states - itself a consequence of its d electron structure (you can look this bit up).
