The house is 4000 sq feet. The new boiler would be a Weil-McLain EG series. The boiler is in a stand-up basement area that is accessible from the outside. The contractor is quite reputable, but known to be expensive. Thanks in advance for your help.
A year ago I priced the installation of a boiler for a friend - I was going to provide install it. Since he's an old friend, I wanted to give him a deal - materials at cost + reduced labor. I came up with just under $10K. I seriously doubt that anyone qualified to install a boiler will do all that work for $500.
It all depends on the system that you are getting and the area where you live. It will vary from state to state. It would be a good idea to get 3 estimates from other reputable companies in your area
The price sounds to high. There is a tag on your older boiler that tells you how many B T U the boiler is. Call any supplier and ask how much the boiler would cost. You have to tell them the B T U, and not the sq feet. Also you have to tell them if the boiler is steam or hot water baseboard. After they tell you the price, ad around five hundred dollars for labor
Get some other prices. It sounds a little high but all installs are different. Be wary - steam can be very tricky - especially the near boiler piping. There are not many people out there nowadays that understand steam systems unless they've been around awhile. Ask anybody bidding if they regularly service and replace steam boilers. This guy may be high because he knows he will have to make piping modifications that other contractors don't see. And no on in their right mind would replace a steam boiler for $500 labor unless they are clueless. Besides the boiler, the materials alone could run $300-$500 depending on the installation. A simple water level elevation change due to the difference between the old and the new boiler can throw off things.
