I am going to be having a party with about 250 people. I need to buy the speakers and there are two 3000 speakers speakers. they are active speakers(they have built in amps)
i once attended a party where 300 watts per channel was being emitted in a basement you could literally watch the cracks in the basement wall grow 6000 wats is more than enough to render permanent hearing loss more is not always more gooder venue should be considered putting out that much noise you should expect a visit from the local police shutting your party down for Disturbing the Peace if there are neighbours within about half a mile you might want to research the local ordinances covering that before your party ends up a big disappointment for all participants
Don't believe the rating of some speaker out in the market. Even for professional use you do not see speakers handling more than 500 watts. The cost of such speakers that can handle large amount of power are very high, beside that the power amplifier to handle them are also high. Most of the time you will see stacks of speakers to cover large area, instead of having one speaker. Speakers with high diceble rating like 95db spl will require less power than that of a speaker rated at 89db. If you are close to the speaker you would ruin your hearing. It is not all about how much wattage you have for a speaker, it is about how those speaker will produce clean sound.
Charlie - I would love to know the make and model of these 6000 watt powered speakers. I have been doing professional audio and Dj'ing for many years and those speakers sound very over rated. I have a basic 3000 watt sound system and that is considered modest in the DJ world. A real 6000 watt system is pretty common but you need more than one electrical circuit to run it. Anyway, your 6000 watt speakers should work fine for a large party.
A good speaker with high efficiency (95dB+) and an amplifier with decent power (250 watts RMS per channel or more), properly positioned will provide plenty of sound to a 250-guest assembly. If you can hoist the speakers above the crowd and position them at the crowd, sound will be distributed properly. To answer your subject heading directly, 6KW is easily more than plenty of power for all but the most inefficient speakers, and make sure the speakers can handle that kind of power. Distortion will greatly affect the quality of the sound as well as the reliability of the system. Happy listening!
