Question:

Is a CATBACK or AXELBACK exhaust system better? and why?

really, what are the main differences and why is one better than the other? Which will gain more power, and have a better exhaust note? I have a 2000 toyota Celica gt if it helps

Answer:

You will learn as you do more. Most of your tests are usually done with the sst (tiger top) but of course not all. also most labs have a system either on their reqs or if they are computerized it will print out exactly what tube is used for what test. good luck it is a great job. I love it!
Catback and Axelback is just telling you where the exhaust system begins from. If you want greater power, you will need a bigger pipe starting from the headers all the way back as that allow more air flow which in turn allows for more fuel to burn and pressure to build. If you just want better sound, you want to look for exhaust with big baffles since they are what affect the sound in the exhaust. Hope this helps you.
I don't know of any tricks for remembering. It's just something you pick up after drawing tons of blood, especially since most tests will go in a serum separator tube.
manufacturers forever since cars have been invented try to come up with a name or catch phrase that sounds like something new, when its the same ol same ol. CAT BACK means only from the catalytic coverter back. Axle back is from the axle back, which may be a resonator and a tailpipe. The problem is unless you have a high powered race engine, none of ths crap does you any good. If you buy a high performance exhaust and stick it on a stock engine what have you got? nothing but an empty wallet and maybe a sticker for the window. For the most part there is no reason to slap expensive racing parts on a stock engine. High performance exhausts or power chips or cold air filters are all hype. If any of the magnetic fuel savers or 50 horsepower chips or intakes worked cars would be 400 horse power and getting 40 miles to the gallon around town. Thats not how it works. IN fact cols air intakes have been proven to be crap, and an air filter stuck on a plastic sewer pipe does not give 50 horsepower. Cold air intake intake is already on cars bought from the dealer. It goes from the intake over to the inner fender. The only thing adding a plastic tube with an air fliter does is make the intake LOUDER inside the car. big deal and some intakes can suck up rain water, which will destry your engine in a big fat hurry if you suck water in the engine. Fake power chips are another example of garbage engineering. Unless an engine is built to be adjusted there is little a pwer chip can offer and even worse, sometimes they do change the timiing in an attempt to boost power. This added benifit does one thing I know of, causes premature valve wear.
Catback is longer, and goes from the Catalytic Converter to (and includes) the muffler. Axle back would refer to the section of the exhaust from the rear axle back, generally just the muffler. IF there is any performance gain, cat back would be better, since it would remove more restrictions, but generally most of the restriction is in the header and catalytic converter. All you would really gain with either system is a different sound, which mostly comes from the muffler, and the look of the pipe coming out of the muffler.
