Question:

Is a cold air intake really worth it!?

I just bought a 2010 Scion tC. And i‘m looking to gain power, where possible, for cheap!I‘ve been researching the KN Typhoon Cold Air Intake, and i‘m just wondering if anyone has any experience with either this, or any other cold air intakes. Comments?Opinions?Advice?Thank you :)

Answer:

For day to day driving it's a waste of money. If you're in to all out racing then every small Iota adds up and even a few extra molecules of cold air may be worth the cost. The extremely small gain is however, not really worth the large cost for drivers who aren't dedicated racers. Most drivers who pay that steep price are either on an ego trip and/or don't really know a heck of a lot about mechanics.
most, if not all cold air intakes are only recommended for off-road use only. Your engine will not last as long as it could have with the factory intake. CAI's are not very restrictive and let in small particles into the intake manifold. You will gain some power and improve fuel economy, but If you're planning on keeping your car for a long time, don't do it.
For daily driving, it's not worth shelling out a fortune for KN. As long as you're not building a show car, an eBay bomz CAI would work just fine. You're not going to see a significant improvement to your car with this install. Maybe a few HP and a slightly better throttle response but don't expect your gas mileage to get better. You can't get more power and fuel economy together. Gotta sacrifice one for the other (or balance them nicely). Also, KN filters need to be oiled. I'm not sure if all CAI intakes are like this, but I know this annoys some people when their filter needs to be cleaned.
