Question:

Is an Allison Transmission good?

I have a Chevy Siverado 2500 HD with an Allison transmission. I thought it was an average performing truck but everyone I knew who knew some things about trucks said what I had was pretty cream of the crop since it had the Allison Transmission. Is that true, is the Allison transmission all it? Does it have many or any benefits over the other trucks on the market or is it really no different from anything else?

Answer:

The early ones in the light trucks had issues. Im thinking this was late 80's? I was told that this was because the GMC /chev truck people modified the original design (to make it cheaper and or lighter?). Once they went back to the straight Allison design they were back to reliable again.
Allison Transmissions are one of the best made transmissions of our time. As a mechanic, the Allison Transmission is rare to see in a shop.
Well there is no doubt about it. Allison makes transmissions for most all dump trucks and semis if you ever pull any thing with your truck just push the button on your gear shift so a light comes on dash saying tow haul and watch how much it changes everything about shift points and stopping it has its on transmission break awesome i have had my chevy 2500hd with 8.1and allison for almost 9 years and love it .so for sure its a awesome up grade it will cost you a lil more for service but well worth it so enjoy
