Question:

Is an engine attatched to a transmission?

When you buy a new engine does it come with a transmission?Basically are they the same part attached to each other?

Answer:

most of the time, the engine is bolted directly to the transmission. cars such as the newer corvettes or the 63 tempest and i am sure there are more, had what resembled a drive shaft from the back of the engine to the front of the trans. its funny that some one gave me a thumbs down for this. i have seen it. sure the engine is purchased as a separate part aside from the trans but still in the car they are bolted together most of the time.
If you are asking if a replacement engine comes with a transmission, the answer is, No. When a new or rebuilt engine is installed in a used car the existing transmission is left in place in the car and the new engine is bolted up to it using what is called a bell housing which adapts the two parts. Modern automatic transmissions can cost as much as an engine and sometimes even more.
Engines are sold just as an engine. Transmissions are sold by themselves too. The transmission bolts to the motor to transfer power.
