Question:

Is cold air intake really worth it in GT?

In a 02 mustang gt, is a cold air intake KN or other top brand going to be worth the $120-$180? Vs Stock filter and all. I also have some sort of flowmaster. I just got the car. So from you, first hand, what do you think?

Answer:

It'll likely add 5-10HP. Depends on what you're into, and what other bills you have etc. I've spent 10's of thousands on modifications to cars in my lifetime (seriously). It's all about whether or not you're into it. Also, research the different available parts and brands, and determine which one is good for you. Sometimes off-brands provide more horsepower for cheaper, and with some brands maximum horsepower is attained by purchasing multiple products that are specifically designed to work together.
Any cold air intake is almost a complete waste of money. On most cars the stock intake can provide all of the air the engine needs up to at least 5,000 RPM. It's only at higher RPM that a cold air intake will provide an improvement and not much at that unless you also modify the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and exhaust system. What goes in must have a way to get out or it doesn't go in to begin with.
think about what you are asking? lets see, the only way to get a horsepower gain, that means the engine has to be sucking a lot of air, so the higher the rpm the more hp? correct? do you plan to BLAST ALL OVER TOWN AT WHAT 4000 RPM?? IMPRESSING SOMEONE WITH YOUR EXTRA ONE AND A HALF HP ?( if you are lucky. save your money, it may mess with the computer, it could lean the motor out (this is bad) if you want to do something that boosts performance make it worth your while and work accross the rpm range, you know like bigger injectors, some hi performance heads, bigger cam, free flowing exhaust, you know make a fire breathing dragon, not some poo sucking sewerpipe with an air filter stuck to it, come on , do it the right way, and make a wild mustang, not a mild mustang?? ok??
