Copper is considered a non-precious metal, however it does have enough value that many people steal it from construction sites and vacant homes. It's become such an issue (the stealing) that most recycling places will now copy your driver's license or take a thumb print when you sell copper pipe.
No it's not a waste of time if the price of copper goes up. Copper is considered a base metal.
