Question:

Is Gardening a Girl's Thing?

Some of my Friends are saying quot;WOWquot; and other things, Im just going to grow Vegetables and Some Flowers (to make it look nice). What should I do?

Answer:

I have yet to see a women landscaper! Guys and Girls garden and I dont think there are anymore Girls garden than guys. There's definitely nothing to be ashamed about at all since its a great hobby for all ages and all genders.
You should garden! It's a girl thing AND a guy thing. I know lots of men who garden. Just as many as women, actually. Who wouldn't love digging around in the dirt and getting nice things to grow?
It is not a girl's thing! There is a men's garden club of america association with clubs in 17 or so states across the nation. Not only are they avid gardeners, they are also into civic projects. But back to you...........I've met many, many men to love to garden......some grow everything others specialize: veggies, flowers, cactus, etc. Don't think of it as girlie. The majority of the most beautiful gardens I've seen have been done by men. So dig that dirt to your heart's content.
My second oldest son just got put in charge of the big garden at his university. My oldest son has a huge garden and is selling vegetables to farmers markets and to an inn near his home. His wife was raised on a farm but he's the one that does most of the work in the garden. I'm glad they didn't think it was a girl thing when they were young. They were great helps in the home vegetable garden my husband and I have. That second oldest son also designed and planted a study garden. It was a place for him to study away from his younger siblings. Its a great place to go to for peace and quiet. Its full of ferns, flowers and shrubs. Grow some weird vegetables that will amaze your friends and shut them up. I grow brilliant GREEN and blue corn, purple sweet potatoes, purple green beans, purple tomatoes and purple potatoes. You can find the seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. BTW, the guy that founded Baker Creek started the company when he was just a kid and look where its taken him!
Some of the most famous garden designers and gardeners in the UK are men - so don't let anyone put you off. Growing fruit and vegetables is great - I grow blackcurrants, raspberries, wild strawberries, courgettes and green beans and my daughters (one of whom is 13) loves eating them off the bushes - well the raspberries anyway! Flowers are good in a veg garden because they encourage bees and other pollinators. Sounds to me like you should find out about cottage gardens because they mix up flowers and veggies - might be worth looking at the website below under Cottage Gardens for some info on the type of flowers you might try. Go for it - and good luck!
