Every once and a while an alarm goes bad for some reason, it happened to me last month. I just replaced the alarm with a new one.
You can sand fiberglass, however you should take safety precautions. A full respirator is needed. Face shield and or goggles. Wear a throw away suit, with gloves. I almost always wet sand. Do the sanding indoors in a space with filtered dust control. Use a vacuum dust collector at the point of sanding. A lot of palm sanders have a vacuum hose attachment. Enclose the space with plastic, to prevent contamination after your done. It sounds like you are new at the molding process, so I'd use a filled resin (micro balloons or fiber) and cover the areas that didn't come out smooth, then sand to smooth, then gel-coat to finish. That's way less sanding.Next time, if there is a next-time use a mold release, and a mat-roller to insure you get full glass wetting and no air bubbles. Also the plug should have a relief taper so that the part will separated easier.
I'm going to beat a dead horse here: When you sand fiberglass, you create extremely small particles, it can do permanent damage to your lungs. Just saying, take the respiratory precautions seriously. Especially if you're using power tools.
