Is it bad to drive a car without an exhaust?

Answer:

Depends what you mean by no exhaust. If it's open exhaust manifolds or headers no it won't hurt it. I have seen some people run a engine without exhaust manifolds that's a big no no. But just open headers or open manifolds nope it wont hurt it. Just be sure no fuel lines are close to the open manifolds or headers so that you don't start a fire as it may put a flame out when you rev it. I highly wouldnt recommend driving it on the highway though because if a cop hears the open exhaust you will have 2 major Bill's one a ticket an 2nd purchasing a exhaust after the ticket. Not worth a ticket bud.
YES YES YES! tghe CONVETER can overheat and you can RUIN your engien from bad AIR/FUEL mixtures! The EXHAUSTS on all cars are VERY skillfully designed and are TAILOR made for each car and tested for YEARS before giving to the public! If you REMOVE it you are RUINING the car! If it FAIELD then YOU have done somethign WRONG! Most are NOW stainless steels! MOST wil outlast the next president I WOULD BET tht your use VERY CHEAPO oil changes and that yoru CHECK ENGIEN light is on or has been on a LONG LONG TIME! When your AIR/FUEL mixture PUKES it wil drag your EXHAUST down with it! USE ONLY EUROEPAN GRADE FULL SYNTHETI(C OILS and have your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE, EGR PCV and THROTTLE BODY cleaned up to SHOWROOM with AMSOI POWER FOAM! Get a MOTOR FLUSH doen by someone that KNOEWS cars using AMSOIL prodcuts! Thsi wiL SAVE your engien EXHAUST and CONVERTERS and O2 sensors and extend LIFE of engine! THREE MILES is OKAY! Try to get the REAL FACTORY PARTS and not JUNKER aftermarket stuff! get the PARTS NUBMERS and use eBay or GOOGLE to find them! LSIT CRAR TYPE YEAR MODEL ENGIEN SIZE and MIELAGE here! I an RESTORE most systems easily unless GM ones! GOOD LUCK!!
There are 3 basic (safety) problems with an open exhaust system under the car: 1. Heat. The closer to the engine, the hotter the exhaust is. Exhaust blowing on the floor from the outside can set the carpet on fire inside. Can also melt electrical wiring in the area. We used to temporarily wire up the disconnected pipe/muffler and use a split metal soup can (or other can) with radiator hose clamps to temporarily connect it to the existing solid part. It would then keep the heat in the exhaust system where it belongs. 2. Source of carbon monoxide. Keep your windows open. 3. Engine runs leaner. If an engine runs at moderate or high power for a sustained time, the exhaust valves will get hotter and can burn. So drive conservatively. 4. Noise. Temporarily won't do anything bad, except attract attention (police) and make your ears ring (plug them, lol). If you drive conservatively the whole trip, it will minimize problems. cont. in comments
