Question:

Is it normal for a heating unit to trip off the smoke detectors the first time you use it?

Ok so, I bought an AC/Heating unit in about march so I never got to use the heating portion. But now since it's starting to get chill outside I wanted to have it ready for when cold starts. Anyway, when I turned it on it started working fine but all of a sudden all the smoke detectors started going haywire. There was no smoke however and I am not 100% sure if they also detect carbon monoxide. But is it normal for this to happen on the first ever time you use it? I immediately shut it off too and opened all the windows in case it was carbon monoxide

Answer:

Mitch is 100% correct.
a good installer would have burned off oil on new heat strips once it burns off you ll be alright installer should have done that when installed
I work for a large commercial HVAC contractor, in large units it is normal to experience a burn off curing initial startup. Most smoke detectors do not detect CO, they either detect particles than can conduct static electricity or particles that block light.
Dust settling on the heat exchanger typically smokes or smells the first time the furnace is lit off for the season. once burnt off it will not do it again.
