Question:

Is it ok to put a blanket over my bearded dragon's tank while its sleeping?

I have my baby bearded dragon named Dante in a glass tank in my roomAfter i turn off its lights and everything for it to go to bed for the night, i still like to stay up and watch tv for quite a bit after thatI am worried that the lights and all from the tv might be keeping him awake and/or annoying himIf so, would it be alright to place a blanket over the tank to keep the light out till morning?

Answer:

Any material that is heavier than water can be made to float as long as the material is relatively rigid, not porous, and won't dissolve in waterWeight is not the only issueYou can make a boat from cementjust mold it so that it is hollowed out like the hull of any boat(Form the cement over a mold to get the shape you desire.) The trick is to be sure it is shaped in such a way as to be stable, and shaped so it can displace a water mass that is greater than the weight of your boatIf the boat and its contents weigh ten pounds, it must displace ten pounds of water without any water spilling over the edge of the boat into the inside of your hullIf that happens, the boat will sinkThat is why stability is important.
Whatever you use, shape it like a bowlThe principle is that you have the same weight of material, but the potential for a larger displacement of water because of the airspace inside the bowl-shaped boatYou can make it from aluminum foil, plastic, ceramic, glass, brass, sheets of steel, fiberglass, etcIf you don't want to work with the high temperatures and pressures you need for shaping and joining pieces of glass or metal, you can use a non-soluable adhesiveThe more I think about it, the more I like the idea of making a boat of ceramicIt would be simply a clay boat, dried an fired in the kilnI supposed you could even use it un-fired but it would soften, leak, and sink after a short whileIf it is to be large, you can give it structural stability by building the boat of chicken wire or some similar framework, then laying your clay, plastic, or fiberglass over the frameThe calcualtions: The wieght of the material you use to make your boat and the weight of the cargo are the displacement of the boatDisplacement is equal to the weight of the water your boat displaces when it is floatingThe volume of your boat below the water-line is the volume of water it displaces when it floatsSo, you should figure out how much your boat and cargo weigh, then calculate the volume of the water that weighs the same, then shape your boat to take up at least that much space below the water-line and a little more for a rail above the water-line.
I completely disagree with both of the answers provided above as they give incorrect information which could be harmful to the health of your dragonYou should NEVER use an under tank heater with a bearded dragonDragons can not feel heat on their underside therefore it is very easy for them to get burnedYou should also NOT be leaving a light on at nightIf you leave a light on your dragon's tank overnight (even a colored bulb), it will disturb their sleeping patterns which will lead to other health issuesAs long as the temperatures in your house stay about 70 degrees Fahrenheit then you DO NOT need an additional heat sourceIf your house drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit then you can purchase a ceramic bulb that emits heat but no lightAs for your original question, yes you can place a blanket over your dragons tank as long as you do not cover the entire thingYou need to make sure there is an area left uncovered so that the vivarium gets the proper airflow.
In order to answer this question, you must first understand how boats float When you throw a rock into a lake, it sinksBut a boat weighs more than a rock, and it floatsThe reason is because the boat displaces it's weight in waterYou will have to find or create something that can do thisAnd it should probably be something shaped similarly to a boat.
Form the sinking material into a hollow shapeSteel plates sink, but when welded together to make a hull, the volume of the hull contains air, which reduces the density of the entire boat.
