Question:

knitting: substituting yarn?

is it ok to substitute a yarn with a different yarn weight? in the pattern, super bulky yarn was supposed to be used but i think it looks too huge and besides i cant find any in my local yarn shops! i know the size would come out way smaller but im fine with that .(in fact i DO want it much smaller) are there any other risks involved? should i or should i not?also another question: for 1 project, can u use acrylic yarn but then change to cotton yarn for a small part? the colours complement so well but i dunno if it would be wise to change material of the yarnthanks!

Answer:

While you can use a lighter weight yarn, if you use the same needles as called for you'll end up with something far more open or holey than you expectAs for changing needle sizes, too, while your project should come out smaller, it may also come out as out of proportion and look oddSounds strange, but patterns are written for a specific yarn (ever wonder why patterns call for so and so's yarn specifically? This is why.) on a specific size (or close to it) and a specific gaugeYou could use two strands of bulky or chunky weight yarn, btw, to equal the super bulkyAs for changing fiber content, no, don't do itThis also means a change in how the fibers act and may cause puckering or other problemsStick with one or the other, but mixing fiber contents often results in disappointment.

Hi Joe.Now that you know What cha cooking for dinner?
What a great questionStar for you I love my cast iron cookware and use it often, however the very first step in quailty cast iron cookware, is not buying a substandard brand Seriously, I look in thrift stores and antique shops for older cast iron cookwareI avoid buying new, but if I do, I almost always buy Lodge and avoid anything made in ChinaYou seriosuly do not know the metal content and the quality is not that great.
