Question:

Is it okay to wax vinyl floors?

Is it okay to wax vinyl floors? Does it help extend th elife of the floors or does it hurt them?

Answer:

the best thing you can use on a vinyl floor is just plain soap and water.
Usually flush or slightly below. Slight, like you suggest isn't a problem. The wax ring will compensate. Keep tiling.
It is ok to wax it. only thing is once you wax it you will have to strip it and then it's up to you if you want to re-wax it. waxing it not only adds a shine but it allows you to scratch the wax and not the vinyl if you do scratch it. I wouldn't wax it though. It is like shaving your arm pit hair. once you do it you will always have to do it because it grows back thicker.
yes wax protects vinyl floors, make sure the floor is clean and free of any detergents,if possible apply the wax with a synthetic mop, dont put more than 1 coat next to the baseboards because it will never wear off , 3 or 4 coats in the traffic lanes, make sure you allow 30 mins drying time between coats, pre-soak your mop in clean water before putting your mop in the wax.(you dont want your mop to soak up and hold a half gallon of expensive wax.) put down even thin coats of wax. after your beautiful floor has dried you need to remember to keep it dust mopped and keep your mopping to a minimum with a very mild cleaner, keep your rugs and mats vacummed as sand and dirt on the bottom of shoes are just like sandpaper. if you need to touch-up the floor after a few months make sure the floor is clean and re-apply one coat of wax. p.s. stripping damaged wax can be a real problem if you dont have the right equipment or experience, most people do it one time and then hire a pro.(me) lol. good luck.
I believe manufacturer's tell you NOT to wax vinyl floors. I have had experience moving into rentals where the previous renters used a product like Mop n Glo, what a mess, they end up waxing and re-waxing and the product doesn't really clean the floor, so you end up with layers of dirt and wax! If at all possible, I would suggest not waxing!
