There are different treatments for the two compounds. To reduce SOx as in a coal fired boiler sometimes limestone or a form of it called dolomite is injected into the gas stream as the coal is being fired. Also, there are things that can reduce the amount of S in the coal. Removal of pyrites will cut down on SOx emmisions. For NOx emmisions you can reduce the amount of NOx by using Oxygen enrichment and controlling the temperature at which the fuel is burning. In general the higher the flame temperature the more NOx is formed. By increasing the flame speed and entraining more cooler air the amount of NOx will be reduced. Another treatment is to tailor the burner so that the fuel and air mix slowly to control the flame temperature reduce NOx.
