I moved in a new house and they just cut off the electrical wire to the garage door opener. the old wire is 18 gauge/3 and i put a 16 gauge /3 on it. is it safe. works fine. will it pull more juice since it is 16 gauge or its max juice that runs through it is bigger.
Yes it will be fine, 16 is a bigger wire than 18 and it will not take any more power because it depends on the device and breaker on how much power it uses, also for FYI electricity runs around the wire not through it.
When I run short sections to power openers or when changing garage wires I use 12 gauge THHN. Stranded is easier to work with but some local codes require solid wire. I have never seen 18 gauge in a house, but I guess times change. And yes, the electrical current travels near the surface of the wire. It is not required but I use a GFR to plug the opener into, especially if your garage door itself is steel.
RE: I am making a chandelier, what gauge wire should I use? I am making a chandelier. It is made up of 19 light bulbs wired in parallel, all of them are 40 watt bulbs. I am plugging this chandelier into a standard 120 volt wall socket. I think I should use 18 gauge wire minimum, and 16 gauge wire to be safe but I'm not sure. What gauge wire
Yes it is safer than the 18, no it will not use more electricity.
you did the right thing. you made it up to cold. with the 18 gauge wire they could have a fire over heating it. never use 18 for garge door opener.
