I am getting a leopard gecko and i have a 20 gallon long tank and want a safe substrate for it. I will not use sand not even calcium sand. And I don't like the way paper towel looks. Someone told me about Zoo Med Excavator Clay Burrowing Substrate. Would that be safe to use?
Personally I don't like it. If its collapses it could kill your gecko. I like slate tiles. They are safe, easy to clean, cheap, don't have to be replaced and are natural for leopard geckos. Leopard gecko live on hard packed rock and dirt. Don't use calcium or any other sands. They all can cause impaction and none of them can be digested. It doesn't matter what the bag, employ, other person says sand is not digestible. Email me if you have any more questions
yes that is safe as long as they are to big for him/her to swallow but the best substrate is paper towels (I use paper towels), news paper, or even repti carpet
I used to use Corn cob granules, which were recommended by my vet. They are safe as they prevent burns from heat mats and the gecko will not swallow them.
The substrate you are asking about is probably not what you think it is..You mix it with 7 cups of water, shape the way you want it to look and then it drys and gets hard. It is not something you can scoop poo out of easily like Calci-sand.( which by the way is made for Geckos) Calcium sand is by far the best substrate to use for smaller lizards, as it is digest-able and will not cause impaction. Mulch's or any kind of wood chips are Not Good and should not be used as1 little pieces swallowed can be the death of your animal. If you have never owned one before, i wouldn't just say i'm Not going to use that because my friend,( who also doesn't know anything about geckos told me it was bad) well i hate to tell you this but a majority of people ues Calci-sand for there Geckos. Take this advice or not its your animal....
