Question:

Is my pilot light out if my house is heating up?

I turned on the heat for the first time today and the air that filled the room was a little musty. It doesn't smell horrible but I just got a little paranoid (I'm an anxious person by nature) that my pilot light might be out, and I have no idea how to get to the furnace to check it. However, within ten minutes of turning my heater on, the thermostat went from reading 50 to reading 60. Would the room even heat up if the pilot light were out?

Answer:

The room would not heat up if the pilot light was out. When the heat is turned up or on, the pilot light(the little flame) becomes bigger and heats up (i think water).
i thought it would be the opposite.. bc the pilot light fuels the heat.. also older furnaces always have a musty smell at first, bc it hasn't been ran in awhile.. but if your to scared turn it off.
no, it would not heat without the pilot light unless of course, you have electric heat! DER DER DER!
no the room would not heat up that fast if the pilot light was out, you furnace is ok, if it has a misty smell, you may want to change your filter. I f you don't know how just run your heat and give your provider or local hardware stor a buzz in am
It's OK if the pilot light is out there is a safety system that will prevent the gas from coming out. In other words it just will not work. Just turn it back on. The smell was the dust burning on the heat exchanger this is normal the first time turning it on in several months. Your pilot light is NOT out. If the smell bothers you open a window to air the place out. If the pilot was out the house would not heat up.
