Question:

Is my son to little for a twin bed?

I am pregnant and He will need to go to a toddler or twin bed at 20 months. I already have a twin bed and I could but rails for it. I could also buy a toddler bed but would like to save money if possible. I am not trying to be cheap!! What should I do? Is a twin bed going to be to high off the ground for him?

Answer:

No he isn't to young. I had my son in a queen size bed of his own before he turned two years old. I put rails on it and he is now 3 years old. My daughter went into a queen in her room at the age of 2. As long as you have rails on it, there isn't a problem. Toddler beds are nice but they grow out of them, that's why we didn't go that route. And you pay money for them, and they only use them a short time. This way was so much easier and they both took to the bed. They liked sleeping in a BIG. It made them feel like a big kid. :)
I never used a toddler bed with any of my children. They went from the crib to a twin bed with rails at about 15-18 months old.
I know of young children like your son who have had regular sized beds with rails on the sides of them. As long as you have the rails you have nothing to worry about. A twin bed will work just as fine. P.S. I think toddler beds are just another thing to waste your money on seeing that twin beds work fine as well!
I would go for the toddler bed first so it will be a gradual change from his crib... better safe than sorry... and you can get them used cheap if money is tight (I understand) and brand new at walmart without the mattress for about 50 dollars. Now... When my step son was 3 years we put him in a twin without rails of any sort and he was fine and now has a full. (almost 4) I think if you invest in the toddler bed now... then you can use it for your next baby... and then I would say after age 3 they could sleep in a twin without any rails. Good Luck!
What you could possibly do is take the bed off the metal frame and only use the box spring and mattress until he is a little older. And make sure two sides of the bed are to a wall, the head of the bed and one of the sides. When you put him to bed lay him closest to the wall so he has a smaller chance of rolling off the bed. Most toddler beds also have something on the end of it. I do not really see the need for it, but if you want put like a toybox or a bench at the end of the bed to give you more of the same effect. My mom actually just put us straight into a twin bed, metal frame and all. Yeah it was high, but we had a stool near the bed to help us climb up and down, and we knew not to roll off the bed. She actually put pillows on the floor near the bed for the first week or so, incase we did decide to roll off the bed so we would see how much it hurt, without getting hurt.
