Question:

is my transmission bad?

i have 72 camaro and i had is sitting for 1 year before a got a new motor. after i put in th new moter my transmission dident shift gears. i took to a shop and they showed me that some parts where burned out. can they be fixed or should I just have it rebuild?

Answer:

Automatic or manual it can be rebuilt or replaced. Not knowing what parts were burned out, I don't believe anyone on this forum can answer your question. If the transmission was working before you parked it, I don't see how it can be bad now.
I'm going to assume it's an automatic transmission. The shop more than likely just removed the transmission pan and seen clutch debris and metal shavings in the bottom of the pan. That means the friction material is wore off the friction discs in the clutch packs in your transmission. The clutch packs have what they call 'friction and steels' in each clutch pack. There's a clutch pack for each gear in an automatic transmission, I'm pretty sure your 1972 transmission has just 3 forward gears and a reverse so that's 4 clutch packs. Be prepared to spend between $1000 - $2000 to get it rebuilt properly. There's more to it than just replacing the friction and steels in the clutch packs, a good transmission guy will replace the torque converter, rebuild the transmission pump, all the seals and gaskets etc etc etc.
