Question:

Is paper clay considered a ceramic art?

Besides materials like porcelain, ceramic and glass, would an air drying clay fall under the same category? And if not, how would you classify it? I am having trouble categorizing my clay art on websites besides calling it clay art.

Answer:

If you use paperclay as a brand name and as air-dry clay then it doesn't contain any clay, I think it's mainly cellulose but I am not sure. I wouldn't call anything made with this ceramic art as that implies that it does contain clay. Maybe closest to papermache? There is paperclay which is ceramic clay which into which paper fibers are mixed in. The paperclay is fired as usual in a kiln. All the paper fibers burn and what remains is ceramic clay. The result of mixing paper into clay is giving a more lightweight product and it also gives the clay more strength before firing and it's also more forgiving in some aspects to work with. Anyway, work made out of that kind of paperclay still would be ceramics.
