Question:

Is Star Trek in any way a plausible view of the future?

Obviously with out 95% of species being bi-pedal. Also more constrained communications. I doubt there will ever be a Universal Translator.

Answer:

If i recall right, Hawking is trying to prove something about light rays near the event horizon. He's trying to talk about a photon that almost is caught by the black hole vs. a photon that is barely caught. There may not be much difference, but the difference is significant. Since these photons must be moving more or less tangential to the event horizon. But they can't possibly cross. They must be more or less parallel. It's complicated because space is warped enough at an event horizon that lines aren't straight. If you think of the analyogy of a mass on a rubber sheet, it's not just a dent. The sides of the rubber are pretty much straight up and down. And, the rubber is frictionless. All analogies eventualy break down. If one doesn't, it's not an analogy. It's tht thing you're talking about.
Honestly, you can say the same thing about the guyskick, punch, clothesline, finisher. plus, the WWe doesn't really put much effort in the division anyway.
