Is there a home remedy to kill ants and insects to use in my vegetable garden?
I don't have an ant problem but keep hearing that Aspartame (yes from Diet Coke) purchased as sweetener in envelope form at the grocery store wil kill them.
You can get boric acid from the drug store. Anything you make yourself will not have the power you need. Sevin is cheap and works well on vegetables wait for 3 days after you spray to be sure you will not eat it.
The previous responant mentioned aspartame...actually, aspartame was origonally created as a pesticide/poison, but since the agriculture market is already flooded with plenty of chemicals, an dsince the product is sweet, Sir Donald Rumsfeld and company decided to sell it to food companies for a greater profit. As for an effective way to rid the garden of ants, plant mint. But be careful, becasue mint is invasive. Instead, plant in pots and place pots around yard and garden and the ants will leave, they cannot stand the smell. And as a bonus, the mint is great for tea, mint juleps, and more.
An organic remedy is to use cornmeal. The ants take it into the mound and are unable to digest it and explode. As for your other insect pest, such as worms, Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis is organic and is naturally produced by plants as a defense. You might want to check out any of your Ortho Home Gardener's Problem Solver books for additional tips.
Hey RCM, Ants are tough. Home Remedy - I never heard of one, except to attract them away - put a bucket of sugar somewhere away from the garden. I use HOME DEFENSE for ants. IT WORKS. You can get it from Lowes, or HD. Ortho 7 dust works, see their web site. If you really get into gardening, then you might try different things. Organic sprays work also. You can hand pick the bugs out of the garden, and you can encourage birds and other predatory bugs. ... catch them, tye a string around one of their legs and have a good time listioning to them buzzz as they go around your head! a previous best answer on Yahoo Questions.
