Question:

Is there a way to cut, facet, and/or polish gemstones without expensive machinery?

I'm an aspiring artist and think that cutting gemstones would be really cool and fun. Are there any non-expensive tools that I could use to get a feel for the art? I looked online for awhile, and it seems the only way is to grind gems is on a grinding wheel, and that freaks me out somewhat ;-) . Also, what gems would you recommend for my first try? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:

hi an straightforward thank you to do it is to soak it in vinegar over night then replaced into off with heat soapy water make certain extremely dry earlier putting away back The vinegar is an exceedingly gentle acid it won't influence your sliver plate yet will influence the grease and dirt that assemble on it desire this helps
You've picked an expensive material to play with. You don't need a grinding wheel, but it's a lot faster than doing it by hand. there are also any number of spinning tools which come with polishing and cutting heads for under forty bucks.
You could, in theory, get carborundum grit (or diamond grit for some stones) and a steel or iron plate and mount the raw stone on a handle (dap stick with dapping wax) and push it back and forth to facet it. You might get one done in a year or so. Go and learn about lapidary and the tools for handling precious and semi-precious minerals.
