I know you aren't supposed to touch your face with your fingers but can touching your face with your shirt act as a shield against the bacteria? I'm not a germophobe but I'm watching contagion and it made me curious.
Most natural gas ovens emit so little CO that that should not concern you; I also think you need to clean the oven, or have the landlord install a new Smoke Alarm (with a hush button). [A lot of self-cleaning ovens will set off the smoke alarms when they go through their cleaning cycle.] Most manufacturers of smoke alarms specify how far away from heating and cooking appliances their products should be installed; also at what distance below the ceiling, and how far from the wall/ceiling intersection. A lot of times, when the building is being roughed-in, the electricians have no idea (although they should) what smoke alarms are being installed; so they go by whatever rule of thumb they have been taught. If you have the unit replaced, be certain it is installed per the instructions.
