Question:

Just wondering, why is the Pope unfallibe when he speaks from Peter's Chair?

I think it's called Peter's Chair, but why is he considered infallible when he speaks sitting on that chair?

Answer:

Actually, the Catholic Church believes that the Pope is inspired by the Holy Spirit to make God's will known to His followers, and is, therefore, infallible *only* when speaking about Church doctrine. This is because he is speaking from the See of Peter, and is seen as being anointed by God (through Jesus) to speak for God on this earth.
The catholic believe is that he's guided by the Holy Spirit which make him infallible at that time and on that subject. Catholics don't believe he is infallible in some across the board kind of way as many anti catholics would have you think
The Chair of Peter is not a piece of furniture. The Pope doesn't sit on it. The Chair of Peter simply refers to the office of Pope, instituted by Christ in Simon Peter.
The Pope is not infallible. Only God is infallible. That is a common misconception of many non-Catholics and some Catholics who don't really know what they are talking about. This misconception may come from the fact that we believe that the Pope is the most divinely inspired man on earth. We believe he is our pontiff, or our bridge to God. The Pope is still a man and subject to fault. The Pope regularly attend Confession. Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have apologized for the past faults of the Church, faults made by men. The Church is made up of humans so it is prone to fault as no human is prefect (not even close).
When the Pope speaks from the chair of Peter it means from the office of the Pope and not a literal chair with four legs. Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit to guide you in all truth. Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church. If the Church is guided in all truth as Jesus said how can the church be wrong in its official teachings? Did Jesus lie? Was he just joking?
