Question:

Keeping new floors clean?

What do you do to keep your floors clean? Both for carpets and hardwood floors.

Answer:

By taking off your shoes at the door, and making sure you go through the house every day with the vacum, to make sure the dirt is picked up, because that is the culprit. And for dusting find a fuzzy pair of booties to use for dusting the floor works great clean as you walk.
Wood floors need to avoid wet conditions, so mopping and using water based waxes are not the best choices. The best way to keep wood floors clean is to vacuum or dry mop about once a week. This will produce the best appearance and wear for your hardwood floors. Also, waxing the surface once or twice a year will help your wood floor last a lifetime.
Hardwood floors should be swept everyday and moped every other day. The have special cleaner for wood. For carpet: Vacuum a couple times a week. Get one of those swifter carpet flicks or something similar to sweep up high traffic areas or you can use your vacuum. You could rent or purchase a wet vac so you can condition your carpets or hire a carpet cleaning company to clean your carpets a couple times a year. Every couple weeks you can use carpet cleaning spray and use that to help keep your carpet s clean. The other thing you can do is get that carpet deodorizer. You sprinkle it on the carpet and sweep it up. Makes the house and carpet smell really nice.
The best way to keep floors clean is to take off your shoes at the door. We do this at my house and it drastically cuts down on the wear and tear of the floors. I only have to vacuum once a week because no dirt can get into the house. I have gone to some houses were shoes are worn and took off my shoes and my white socks got dirty. In my house my kids and I all wear white socks and they all look brand new because the floors are spotless. Shoes off is the way to go!!!
Taking your shoes off is about the best your going to do. The one thing I learned with hardwood floors is they seem to be impossible to keep clean. Obviously you aren't going to let them get disgusting. But Swiffering once a day and mopping a couple of times a week should be sufficient. Remember that you want to keep your baby in a clean but not sterile environment. There are many good bacteria that he will pick up and needs to. If he isn't exposed to bad bacteria, then he will not ever develop a strong immune system.
