knit stitch and purl stitch?
Whether it is a ball or skien it is yarn and normally you would describe it as strands of yarn.
There are two basic stitchesKnit and PurlIf you are knitting a flat piece and you knit all the way across, turn the object and knit all the way back, the stitch will be called 'garter stitch' and looks like dashes or lines with one row ofset from the row beneath or above itIf you knit one row across, turn the work and purl the next row, you have knitted what's called the 'stockinette stitch' and this looks differentOne side will look very smooth, with a lot of little 'v's (this is the knit side) and the other side will have lots of little bumps (or pearls) - this is the Purl side Please note - if you were to purl across, turn the work and purl back it would still be called garter stitch knitting - you wouldn't be able to tell a difference - no one would know if you did the garter stitch with the knit or purl stitch- so , very simply answered - knit and purl stitches only matter when you use them together to make a patterCombining a knit stitch and a purl stitch on the same row will look differently.
