Question:

Laminet flooring?/floating floor?

we had a floating floor put down...after all was said and done....the floor looks like it has waffles in it...has anyone seen this? It's light oak...it's ugly and fake looking....speant 13,000 on it...or is this the way it's suppose to look?

Answer:

Laminate flooring is easy to install and you really can't screw it up when putting it down, at least not to make it look like you described. I would do some research of cost and quality before you make any other home improvement purchases.
Cant imagine spending 13k on a laminate floor. I did my frontroom last year and I believe I spent like $300 total on the flooring and padding. It took 1 day to do. Is your house like 25k square feet or something? Anyhow, no idea what flooring you picked out, not too sure how you would not have an idea how it would look when done, the planks are large enough to get the idea.
Cost wise, it sounds like you got taken big time. Laminate flooring is inexpensive and I did my entire home (5 rooms) for about $300, including labor to have it done. Laminate flooring will never look like real wood so you probably got a cheaper quality with a crappy wood grain pattern on it. Not a defect really, just not top notch flooring. You can't expect that with laminate. Not sure there is much you can do. If you have a bad subfloor, your contractor should not have laid over it without discussing with you first. Also, it should be the type and color of flooring that you specified. If it is not, then you definitely have a right to complain. By waffling I assume that you mean it rolls up and down - if this is every 16 inches, I suspect the contractor laid it in the wrong direction (parallel to the floor joists instead of perpendicular) and this will definitely effect the appearance of the floor. If you mean within a single piece, I suspect that a lower grade of flooring was used and the light reflecting off of the surface is highlighting the imperfections in each piece. In my opinion, that is an awfully high price, unless you have a HUGE home! I charge under $3 per square foot for the engineered type of floor (6x4' planks, mdf type base with prefinished surface) installed (includes materials).
That's not right. I done my living room with a floating floor about 8 years back. Cost me about $500 looks as good today. As the day I put it down. You want your sub-floor flat and a nice snug fit between all the seams with each seam lines staggered. You wanna leave a good half an inch along the walls free so the floor can float. Or you could run into some problems. Causeing it to be a bit tight over time. Damp mop is all you want. No standing water. Mine was made by Armstrong. 30 year floor. I do believe it will last. So far very happy with my floor.
