Question:

Laptop Harddrives?

I have a question about laptop harddrives. Can I buy any harddrive and install it to a laptops, or do laptops need specfic harddrives?

Answer:

Sorry, no all hard drive are made the same. There are several types of hard disk drive, basically 3 types, IDE, SATA and SCSI. The 2 former types are more common. SCSI drives are seldom used in laptops. IDE drives are mostly in older laptop made about 3 years ago, the SATA drives are more recent drives. The different between them are the ways data are stored and retrieve. SATA drive can transfer much more data and for larger capacity drive. To buy the correct type, one should refer to the manual. Even SATA drives have 2 types, SATA1 and SATA2. Google the web could get some information. Physically, SATA drive's connector is much smaller and shorter than IDE drive.
laptop hard drives differ from desktop drives in form factor. 2.5 is the common for laptops, and 1.8 is rare. IDE/ATAPI are older machines interface, newer laptops use SATA.
if you don't like to spend the money for Original Equipment(OEM) product. Disconnect your hard drive and drive down to Fry's electronics or Radion Shacks Ask the guy to give you a range of products that will fit.
Yes you can buy a replacement hard drive, go to your laptop manufacturer's website to find out which form factor you require.
well they need laptop harddrives but other than that they are more or less all the same - open yours up and see what one you have at the moment, then buy the same model but bigger
