Question:

Laptop Keyboardhelp!!!?

I accidentally spilled Amarula on my Laptop Keyboard and was not able to type a single alphabet. I bought an external Keyboard but I would prefer to use the Laptop Keyboard. This happened a week ago and now I can type a few alphabets with my Laptop Keyboard but the rest I can't. Can someone please help me on how can I clean the Keyboard???

Answer:

It is probably broke. It will need replaced. If you have a warranty, use it.
Before cleaning the keyboard you need to remove it from the laptop. The method for doing this differs from one laptop to another. On some yu have to push a few clips down and the keyboard can then be lifted up. On others you need to undo a few screws on the underside of the laptop. On others you need to prise off a panel on the top and then lift the keyboard. You should check out the instructions for your particular laptop. In all cases there will be a wide ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to a socket. The socket nealry always has a latch of some sort - either pulling the front of the socket out a few mm or lifting its lid. Again - research that. Now, once the keyboard is off you can just rinse it under a warm shower. Don't use soap or anything. Just warm water. I know this sounds like the wrong thing to do with electronics but on 3 different laptops I have worked on it was the best solution. (I used to use only neat alcohol for this but it didn't work as well as water). Rinse it enough to dissolve the sticky drink and press the keys to allow the water to get into all the places where sticky stuff could settle. NOW THE IMPORTANT PART. Dry the keyboard thoroughly. Shake the excess water out of it then leave it somewhere really warm for a day. I have had good results using a hairdryer on warm setting. But be careful not to overheat it. Hairdryers can make things REALLY hot. Once you are sure it has had enough time to be completely dry just put it back in the laptop. It will work just fine.
