I used lime-wire but it was totally spammed. I got a lot of spyware on my computer, so be very careful. It's basically free but you don't get much for free. It's called file sharing.
Limewire is legal. Downloading any file that's under copyright (commercial music, movies, software etc) without paying for it is illegal, no matter what software you use to do it. Using Limewire to download the latest version of Linux is legal. Using it to download music that you would normally have to pay for is illegal. If caught, you face a lawsuit, a fine between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file, and up to five years in prison.
lime wire is completely free. and yes, it is illegal. but i've heard that you could only get in trouble if you share the files you download. so make sure you set it up that you can't share files. i'm not positive that's true, but i do it anyways. if you're using lime wire though, you have to be careful you don't download viruses, there's alot of them.

Lime Wire is LEGAL.. just not the illegal content you download on it. Also, just because somebody buys LimeWire Pro doesn't mean it is legal to download songs.. The chance of getting caught is low though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
