Low Iron Question!? 29 wks Pregnant?

Can anyone tell me whats the best way to get my Iron up?I just got a call from my doctor and they said they want me to get Iron shots!!!!I got one of those with my first child and it hurt soooo bad I never got another one?Is there certain foods that can eat to help boost my iron fast?

Answer:

To increase your iron levels you need to eat red meat, beans, and leafy green veggies. When eating these foods or taking iron supplements, you should always drink something with vitamin C in it, like orange juice.NOT MILK!!!!!!! Vitamin C will help increase iron absorption, while calcium found in milk will BLOCK iron absorption! If taking iron supplements, it is best to take on a full stomach in between meals with juice for best results. Because you are pregnant, you still need the calcium found in milk to help with formation of babies bones, so just try to drink milk when not eating iron-rich foods.
Eat green leafy veg, some red meat, eggs (egg yolk is high in iron) but importantly eat or drink something with vitamin C in it at the same time, as iron cannot be absorbed well unless vitamin C is present. For example, I eat scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast with fresh tomatoes, or a lentil stew followed by fruit salad or an apple. This increases your chances of absorbing enough iron naturally without the complications of pills or shots. Also avoid tea near meals as it stops iron being absorbed. Good luck!
Iron Rich Foods containing Heme Iron Excellent Sources Clams Pork Liver Oysters Chicken Liver Mussels Beef Liver Good Sources Beef Shrimp Sardines Turkey Iron Rich Foods containing Non-Heme Iron Excellent Sources Enriched breakfast cereals Cooked beans and lentils Pumpkin seeds Blackstrap Molasses Good Sources Canned beans Baked potato with skin Enriched pasta Canned asparagus Warning: Pregnant women should not eat liver because of its very high Vitamin A content. Large amounts of Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby.
