Question:

Manual Transmission Help.?

Hello i have a 1995 Nissan Maxima 5 spd and i basically drained the tranny oil by pulling out the neutral safety switch. i need to know how to fill the transmission with tranny oil again, (their is no tranny oil dipstick)

Answer:

Look under the hood, you will see it capped offa lot of dealerships do this to try to force you to get it serviced exclusively by the dealership
You do not fill the standard transmission with tranny oil. You use a gear oil and there should be a threaded plug just below half way up the transmission case. You remove this plug and squirt gear oil in until it starts to drain out of the hole. That is the level of oil that you need. If you fill it too full you can cause the seals to leak. I would sugest that you get a manual for your car from your public library. It should show something .
There is a plug about 1/3 of the way up on the transmission that you need to take out and fill with oil to the level of the plug, older vehicles used 80-90w in the manual transmissions, however new rules say that a high quality 10w-30 is better for the gears bearings and seals. This is what the shop I just had some transmission work done a month ago told me they put in my rebuilt manual transmission out of an 87 Samurai. So either one will work just fine. However you may want to go with 80-90 since there is a little left in there.
