I currently have a ‘76 Super Beetle, manual transmission. The manual transmission was shot out, and I would like to replace it with an automatic transmission. Is it possible? Is it expensive? Thank you :)
it is possible, but will be much more expensive - im not sure if autos were offered with a 76 beetle, if they werent then they will be even more expensive.
They had automatic stick shift transmissions that would bolt right in but you would need all of the parts from a donor vehicle to include the shifter and linkages. You would also need a Vacuum plate under your carburetor to operate the Vacuum Pod that controls the release linkage. You will also need the Flexplate and Torque converter and a fluid reservoir for the auto transmission fluid. It would be a lot of work but can be done.
Back in the '70's or '80's - would have been reasonable. Expensive today - UNLESS you can find a VW BEETLE lover that likes to work on them, knows them, and has or can find the auto. Had a '72 Super Beetle Baha. Only made one year and had a special eight step, metallic blue paint job. Came with BAHA badges, a S/S steering wheel and Porsche Aluminum Alloy Wheels. It also had a factory gas heater that - if you went out on a 0 degree day - did not even start the engine but, just pulled the heater switch, it started like a gas furnace and in 10 min the car was 80 deg. Of all the vehicles I have had - I wish I still had that one.
