Plastics are awesome! They often are viewed as a bane of modern existence, but in reality they are a key facilitator of modern life. Check Wikipedia for a pretty comprehensive mass of data relevant to your questions. BTW: one thing many people don't appreciate is that plastics are generally made out of petroleum - that is, they are one of the products that comes out of oil wells. That always spurs me to make a lot of effort in recycling plastics. As an aside, when I was a kid we were given a bunch of model trains and associated things that had belonged to my uncles several decades earlier. Amongst the things were a set of model buildings known as 'Plasticville'. By that time, plastic was seen as a pox on the environment, and I asked my mom about why on earth anyone would produce something that glorified plastics. She, correctly, pointed out how impressive plastics had been when they first appeared en mass in the 50s and 60s. Ever since, in spite of the environmental issues, I have viewed plastics as truly important for modern life and for progress in science and technology. HTH.
