Lately I‘ve been experimenting with different genres of music. Mainly blues, funk, rock, and heavy metal. I want to be able to play all those genres with the right strings. Currently my Fender Squier Strat has nickel-plated steel bright tone Fender brand strings on them. That sounds great for rock. But, I want all-around strings that can play many genres of music. Any suggestions?

Strings are strings as far as I'm concerned.
Hi melanie, you certainly wont be able to use nylon on your guitar. Steel string for accoustic and electrics are different! Accoustic strings usually made of bronze (the wound strings), and bronze is a non magnetic material, so uaing it on electric wont give you much sound at all. I'm eager to try using electric strings on acoustic though! As far as electric strings, You can associate string type with certain era of music. There are flatwound strings which look flat like fettucini, sounds very warm, and usually only used for jazz. Think 1930s. Round wound made of pure nickel, is the old skool strings from the 50s, they sound warmer than steel plated variant, and also give slightly less output. Some of them even come with a wound 3rd string. Round wound nickel plated steel string is the string of today, this type is the most versatile, because the sound is kinda middle of the road, you can do blues, jazz, rock, metal with them. There are many variant and brand to choose from, each with their own technology (different wounding method, different core shape, core material, some are even hand wound, etc.). There are fully stainless steel string, they sound very bright and loud! But also from my experience the tension is higher, i.e they are harder to bend. 0.10 size steel string feels like 0.11 nickel plated steel. Then, most companies also offer coated strings, this mean the strings are encapsulated in a very thin layer of polymer, which acts like shielding against dirt and rust. This type is claimed to last many times longer than regular strings. Some people claim they sound kinda different though, not as bright as regular strings, but most people wont notice anything. Personally I use d addario and ernie ball strings, I think they are the best!
