No, you can'tThey MUST be special felting needles which are sharp and which have barbs so that the wool really starts to feltFelting just does not happen if the needles don't have any barbs! The best is to use wool roving indeed, though I also have used leftover yarns (which have to be 100% wool, otherwise they won't felt) for decorating needle-felted items.
