Answer:

The software that makes your pc work. Without it when you switch it on all you would have is a blank screen and you would be able to install any programs. An example would be windows 98, me, 2000, xp , vista or linux
Basically what Fred C Dobbs said except it was the French and British not French and English. Yeah so the Germans adopted a military tactic of Blitzkrieg which would be kinda like today's equivalent of Shock and Awe. Germany occupied the low countries then they rolled through the Ardene's meeting little resistance and the road to Paris was basically clear. It is true that Italy also invaded France but it was not co-ordinated with Germany's attack and happened near the end of the Battle of France, they gained little headway in achieving their main objective which was to take control of the Alps. The French people were NOT Cheese-Eating-Surrender-Monkeys as some would have you believe. They were totally unprepared for an attack like this on the Germans which made them disorientated. France was more or less surrounded on all sides and an invasion was almost inevitable.
Pull the battery, but buy and install new ones immediately. It is important to have working smoke alarms, and not a good habit to leave them non-working, they can make the difference between being overcome by fumes in your sleep and escaping. (This assumes that it is the separate ceiling mounted alarms, rather than an integrated system ~ with these you need to cancel any active alarm, then reset the system once the cause of the hopefully false alarm has dissipated - leaving the alarm cancelled, but the system offline will also cause this type to chirrup. If it won't reset then it may need servicing, call out your landlord and/or the alarm company to check it over.)
