I live in a rental with a white, metal front door. It has been subject to lots of abuse and it always looks dirty/hideous. Ive obviously cleaned it, but is there something I can do to cover it without taking the door off the hinges? I live in a somewhat dangerous neighborhood in Chicago and I wouldnt feel safe with my door off the hinge for even a few minutes. Would covering it in vinyl work?

Sure leave the metal door on. One way to make it look better is to get some mouldings from your hardware and glue and screw them on. Work out a pattern to start.If you purchase it paint it first before fixing to the door. Any fixing holes can be touched up when done. If you can't screw fix ask the sales people if they have a glue like contact or liquid nails.
