Question:

My Gas furnace has been deemed non fixable due to a crack in the heat exchanger. Can a crack be welded to fix?

Also the technician also said that my duct work would have to be replaced because it was out of code. If the furnace was still operable would it still have to be replaced?

Answer:

With a cracked exchanger you run the danger of carbon monoxide.
Trying to get it welded may not even worth the trouble! This is caused by metal fatigue and more cracks are likely to be found and the crack can be in such tight places a welder can't get to them.
if the heat exchanger is cracked due to metal fatigue, have the furnace replaced, the duct work should be left along, he is trying to make more money, on the duct work.
First off let me start by saying this. NO manufacturer of any furnace will allow a heat exchanger to be welded. A cracked heat exchanger can and will cause carbon monoxide to enter the home and KILL you. Yes it will KILL you. It is odorless, colorless, and it will KILL you. Play it safe, get it replaced and save your families life. No heating contractor can allow the furnace to be used or turned on if it has a cracked heat exchanger. They MUST by law condemn the furnace. I hope this helps and good luck to you. Please have the furnace repaired or replaced by a trained professional. It's not worth your life.
no they can not be welded you are dealing with 1 a bad heat exchanger has to be changed 2 energy code for your duct work when they pull a permit to change the furnace it has to be up to energy code its for your benefit you have r-4 or r-6 insulation of coarse you can have someone else do it but a permit is there to protect you gl
