Question:

my mechanic says i have loose bearings can i drive with these?

I took my 2001 lincoln ls V8 into get the engine checked it needs work done, which is expensive, which i knew it would be. They checked my front sway bar which is broken and needs replaced.. but they took it upon themselves to check all my wheel bearings, and they are now telling me i need to replace all of them! cause my bearings or hub is loose.....but i don't notice anything odd or any noise when i drive... they say it will cost almost 2400 $ to replace cause they have to buy the whole kit set up and cant buy just the piece.... does this have any truth to it? any advice is appreciated

Answer:

Wheel Bearing Loose
A hub job shouldn't be 2400. If you have a jack you can check the play of your bearings. Lift up the car and grab the tire at the top and bottom. Push the top and pull the bottom simultaneously. If it moves quite a bit, your bearings are most likely bad. I agree with both of the previous answers. Verify that with another shop. Then if it's true, find a shop that lets you bring your own part. Get them from the junkyard and you're good to go. Oh btw, to answer your original question, yes you can drive with bad bearings. If you wait too long though, it won't be good. Once you start hearing a weird noise from the front end, better get that changed immediately. But if not, it still needs attention, but no emergency. You can tell their bad because when you hit a bump your car kind of jerks left or right.
First of all you don't ever have to change all four wheel bearings unless all four are bad and that's highly unlikely. Second the price for changing even all four wheel bearings should be at most $300. The sway bar is a different story but with this mechanic trying to rip you off on bearings, I wouldn't even trust the swaybar assessment. Find a different mechanic. BTW, wheel bearings are supposed to be a little loose, that's why when you install them you tighten the holding nut and then back it off.
Wow that does sound like alot for some wheel bearings to tell you the truth they but for that ls I dont know they could cost a pretty penny and might take alot of work but I really never seen a wheel bearing that was hard to replace so go to your local parts store and price out wheel bearings and see what they come to
